Axe Throwing 101

General Axe Throwing

Q: What is Axe throwing?
A: Have you ever tossed a football with a buddy, and you each try really hard to just rocket one in hard enough to cause pain to each other? And you keep on doing this until someone quits, but kids never quit, so you both just keep taking the pain until your mom calls you for dinner from across the neighborhood, mad at you for getting your school cloths dirty and coming home late. Well, axe throwing is kinda like that, except you’re safely competing head to head by throwing a standard hatchet at a regulation target at the end of a lane to score points. Okay, so maybe it’s nothing like that.

Q: What do I need to know before playing?
A: Ever see Full Metal Jacket? When Hartman tells Pvt. Pyle that Pvt. Joker will teach him everything? “He’ll teach you how to pee!” Well, we won’t be doing that. What we WILL do is start your new experience with a lesson about throwing technique, scoring and safety. Seriously…you’ll be throwing sharpened chunks of unbalanced metal and wood. Ever do that before? Didn’t think so. But we got ya covered. Just listen to us, use common sense and ask your Axe Club of America coach if you’d like assistance or advice at any point. We’re here to help you succeed at this crazy sport. Also, it’s not just a guy thing. Girls can throw just as well and usually walk away loving it. They usually hate having to grow the beard, though.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: First and foremost, your sense of adventure and an open mind! But our lawyers also require ALL participants to wear closed-toe shoes. So, yeah…bring those, too, because the loaners we have might not be as fashionable as you’re used to.

Q: Can I come spectate?
A: Yes and no! Spectators are welcome for our leagues ONLY. Our normal hourly and party format requires everyone to pay to participate. Trust us, you will want to throw an axe after seeing how much fun the rest of your group is having.

Q: Can I bring my kids, even if they’re mature?
A: Are they 18 or over? Then bring ‘em on out! They can use their fancy little hand computers to take pictures and videos for your other kids to watch. Maybe they’ll put them on the internets and you’ll be famous! But we still can’t have you bringing in anybody under 18, no matter how many Facetube points your videos score.

Q: What are you throwing axes at?
A: Angry Leprechauns riding unicorns, at least at the higher levels of play. The rest of the time it’s large, stationary wooden targets 14 feet straight in front of you.

Axe Club of America

Q: Is Axe Club of America a bar?
A: No. Axe Club of America is a private sporting facility that happens to let you drink beer if you choose to. Our paying, throwing customers are afforded this benefit, and our facility is for them. This means that there will not be an assemblage of spectators hanging out and getting drunk. Remember, we are not a bar and we are not BYOB.

Q: Does Axe Club of America accept cash and credit cards?

A: Our Plaza Midwood location is switching to be a cashless facility as of May 1st. Our LoSo location is a cashless facility. We accept all debit and credit cards at all locations.

Q: Is Axe Club of America BYOB?
A: No, we are not BYOB. We sell beer to our paying, throwing customers.

Q: Is this safe?
A: Yes! Axe throwing, while sounding quite intimidating, is no more dangerous than hurling a 12 pound bowling ball, throwing a sharp dart, or standing in a batting cage while baseballs fly at your face (in fact we think it’s safer than some of those activities). But to ensure your safety, we have the following procedures in place:
• Coaches on hand dedicated to guiding your play and ensuring your safety
• Steel fencing separating each lane preventing rogue axes from going into adjacent areas
• Non-negotiable rules in place to keep participants safe (see rules section for more information)
• 14 feet separating players from targets to prevent bounce back from fallen axes
• Separation barrier between throwers and non-throwers

Q: How do I sign up?
A: See our Book Now section for instructions.

Q: How much does this cost?
A: How can you even begin to put a price on happiness? Oh, that’s right…we have. $20 per person per hour or $40 per person for 2.5 hour events.

Please Note: Axe Club of America is a cashless facility

Q: Can I bring my own axe?
A: No. We can’t have just any old axe out of grandpa’s shed whizzing around this place. Besides, we have enough of them around here and they all match. Gotta look good, ya know? If you are part of a league, however, you are permitted to bring your own axe as long as it’s within NATF regulations. More about that can be found here.

Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes! We are fully insured for both mobile and our physical location.

Q: Is this regulated?
A: Yes, Axe Club of America is a proud NATF member. NATF is the National Axe Throwing Federation that represents the sport of axe throwing. You can learn more about them at
